Our Research

Our Research Themes
Socio-Economics
We examine the socio-economic foundations that shape communities, with a focus on inequality, poverty, social mobility, and economic resilience. Our research investigates how economic opportunities, social structures, and institutional mechanisms interact to affect people’s well-being. By studying income distribution, household consumption patterns, social protection systems, and economic shocks, we seek to generate evidence that can guide inclusive growth policies.
Key areas of interest include: poverty and social exclusion, income and wealth disparities, labor markets and informal economies, and the role of social safety nets in building resilience.
Livelihoods
Our livelihoods research explores the diverse economic strategies people use to sustain their lives, particularly under conditions of marginalization, conflict, climate stress, and rapid socio-political change. We study rural and urban livelihoods, migration-linked economies, and how traditional practices are adapting to environmental and technological shifts. This theme highlights the intersection of economic survival, dignity, and sustainability.
Key areas of interest include: agricultural systems and food security, informal and small-scale enterprises, migration and remittances, and community-based adaptation strategies.
Governance
We focus on the structures, processes, and practices of governance that influence service delivery, citizen participation, and accountability. Our research critically examines decentralisation, institutional effectiveness, and the interface between governments, communities, and civil society. By highlighting both challenges and innovations in governance, we aim to contribute to more inclusive, transparent, and equitable systems of public service.
Key areas of interest include: decentralised governance and local institutions, policy design and implementation, accountability mechanisms, and citizen engagement in decision-making.
Urbanization
Rapid urbanization presents both opportunities and challenges for sustainable development. Our research explores the transformation of cities and peri-urban areas, with attention to issues of housing, infrastructure, mobility, and spatial justice. We study the growth of informal settlements, governance of urban commons, and the social impacts of urban planning. By doing so, we aim to contribute knowledge toward creating inclusive, resilient, and environmentally sustainable cities.
Key areas of interest include: urban poverty and inequality, informal settlements and housing policy, infrastructure and service delivery, and sustainable urban governance.
Education
Education remains a cornerstone for building equitable societies. Our research examines how access, quality, and systemic inequities in education shape life outcomes, especially for marginalized and vulnerable groups. We investigate barriers to education, the role of policy reforms, and alternative models of learning that can promote inclusion. Special attention is given to the intersections of education with livelihoods, migration, and gender.
Key areas of interest include: access to education for disadvantaged groups, quality of teaching and learning, affordability of education, systemic exclusion, and innovative learning pathways.
Environment
The environment is both a foundation of human well-being and an area of growing vulnerability. Our research focuses on the interconnections between environmental change, livelihoods, and governance, with a special emphasis on climate change, natural resource management, and sustainability. We seek to understand how communities adapt to environmental stressors, how policies can promote resilience, and how to balance development needs with ecological integrity.
Key areas of interest include: climate change and adaptation, environmental governance, natural resource management, pollution and waste, and the linkages between environment, health, and livelihoods.
